Last Wednesday, March 11<\/strong>, a group of members of AUS \u2013 Association of Architects for Sustainability took part in a technical visit to Bergued\u00e0\/Bages<\/strong> focused on timber construction, industrialization, and the development of the local forest-based bioeconomy.<\/p>\n

The visit is part of AUS\u2019s technical visits program<\/strong>, aimed at engaging with real-world experiences, understanding production and construction processes, and fostering spaces for exchange among professionals committed to more sustainable architecture.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Grupo Boix: driving the Catalan forest bioeconomy<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The day began at Grupo Boix\u2019s new CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) panel factory, where we were able to learn first-hand about the company\u2019s evolution and its strategic commitment to structural timber.<\/p>\n

During the visit, the Grupo Boix<\/a><\/strong> team explained the company\u2019s trajectory, deeply rooted in the local territory, and how they have taken the step toward producing CLT panels from locally sourced timber (mainly Scots pine and black pine), thereby contributing to activating the Catalan forest value chain.<\/p>\n

This industrial investment \u2014which consolidates the Group as a key player in the development of the forest bioeconomy\u2014 highlights the potential of timber as a structural material, not only for its capacity to reduce emissions, but also for its contribution to sustainable forest management and local economic development.<\/p>\n

The visit to the factory allowed us to understand the CLT production process, from the selection and treatment of the timber to the manufacturing of the panels, as well as its applications in construction.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The second stop of the day was at Tallfusta<\/strong><\/a>, a company specialized in timber construction, where we learned about its trajectory, evolution, and positioning within the sector.<\/p>\n

At Tallfusta, they explained their commitment to supporting developers and technical teams in the development of timber projects, optimizing designs and construction systems based on the different engineered wood products available on the market.<\/p>\n

Their approach places special emphasis on the industrialization of construction processes, with the aim of improving efficiency, reducing timelines, and ensuring higher quality in execution, always with a clear focus on sustainability.<\/p>\n

During the visit to their facilities, we were able to see various construction elements in the manufacturing process, among which the prefabricated fa\u00e7ades of a cooperative housing building promoted by Sostre C\u00edvic and designed by Lacol arquitectura cooperativa stood out.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

After a shared lunch in Manresa \u2014which also became a valuable space for exchanging concerns and professional experiences\u2014 the day continued with a visit to the La Bertrana construction site, a project by Lacol arquitectura cooperativa, where the prefabricated elements previously seen in the workshop could be observed in situ.<\/p>\n

This final visit made it possible to directly understand the on-site assembly process, highlighting the advantages of industrialized timber construction in terms of speed, precision, and resource optimization.<\/p>\n

Seeing the transition from fabrication to assembly made the logic of the construction system especially tangible, as well as its capacity to respond to collective housing projects with criteria of sustainability and efficiency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The day was an opportunity to connect different scales of the sector \u2014from forest management and industrial production to architectural design and on-site execution\u2014 and to better understand the potential of timber as a key material in the transition toward a more sustainable construction model.<\/p>\n

At AUS, we believe that this type of visit is essential for bringing professional practice closer to the reality of the sector, understanding production processes, and building community among professionals.<\/p>\n
