Promoting Reuse in Construction in Catalonia

Last Tuesday, April 14, the working session “Impuls de la reutilització en la construcció a Catalunya” was held, organized by the Agència de Residus de Catalunya . with the participation of different stakeholders from the construction sector linked to the field of circular economy.

The event brought together representatives from public administration, technical teams, professionals and sector organizations with the aim of sharing assessments, identifying barriers, and exploring possible tools and leverage points to foster the reuse and circularity of construction materials in Catalonia. Albert Sagrera, vice president of the AUS Board, actively took part in the session, in line with the work AUS is promoting around reuse and the transformation of the construction model towards more circular practices.

The session was structured in two main parts. The first part featured the presentation of two specific studies on reuse. The first, developed by Terraqui, focused on the regulatory and legislative analysis at the Catalan, Spanish and European levels. The second, prepared by Eco Intelligent Growth, aimed to identify case studies, best practices and applied experiences in this field.

These presentations helped contextualize the current state of reuse within the construction sector and brought to the table both the existing challenges and the opportunities for advancing towards more circular models.

The event then continued with a group discussion dynamic organized around thematic working groups focused on different strategic areas: finance, logistics, regulation, technology, education and cooperation among stakeholders.

Based on this collaborative work, a collective debate was held with all attendees in order to identify concrete actions that could help promote reuse, recycling and, more broadly, the circularity of materials at a national scale.

The session highlighted the need to continue creating spaces for coordination and cross-sector collaboration among the different stakeholders involved in order to make the sector’s transformation possible, as well as the importance of building shared frameworks that facilitate the real implementation of reuse in construction.

The presentations and studies developed during the session will soon be published on the Catalan Waste Agency’s website. As soon as the corresponding links are available, they will be shared with AUS members.
