OBJECTIVE

In the transition towards a decarbonized and circular architecture, it is evident that there are more indicators that need to be reassessed. In GT5, we visualize all those variables related to healthy architecture; from material emissions to aspects of circadian light. We rely on physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial criteria that are part of the design processes, to feed into the tools and processes in this transition towards a new, more sustainable and healthy architectural culture.

In the transition towards a decarbonised and circular architecture, it is evident that there are more indicators that need to be re-evaluated. In WG5 we make visible all those variables that have to do with healthy architecture; from the emissions of materials to aspects of circadian light. We draw on the physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial criteria that are part of design processes, to feed the tools and processes in this transition towards a new, more sustainable and healthier architectural culture.

WHAT WE ARE WORKING ON

We are analyzing the different regulations on volatile organic compounds currently in force in Europe, with the aim of determining which would be the most suitable option to implement in Spain. We are also considering the possibility of incorporating health criteria into the current building code.

WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED

Our research and dissemination at Architecture and Health congresses, which have already held 7 successful editions, support our search for solutions. Likewise, we are among a group of like-minded individuals who defend the same cause, which further strengthens our commitment.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Within the trajectory of the health and architecture working group, several achievements have been accomplished: the creation of the Management Commission of the Catalan Society of Architecture and Health within the Academy of Medical Sciences, and support for the creation of the Catalan Society of Environmental Health (SOCSA). It has been achieved that the tool “healthy indoor spaces” is released by the OCT and is open to all members. Moreover, awareness campaigns have been promoted among citizens under the slogan “investing in architecture is improving your health”, which includes 6 informative videos, leaflets, and a campaign accompanying COAC stands at fairs and events. Specific debate tables have also been held on paintings, telecommunications technologies, and of course, the Architecture and Health Congresses.
